When it comes to luxury heritage hotels, the Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur stands in a league of its own. Built in the 17th century by Maharana Jagat Singh II and originally known as Jag Niwas, this marble marvel floats gracefully on Lake Pichola. Today, it is one of the most iconic properties in the world, exuding timeless charm and unmatched hospitality.
Recently, I had the privilege of staying here for my birthday, and words fall short to describe the grandeur and magic of this place. Here’s my detailed review of this dream-like experience.
The Arrival – A Grand Welcome
The experience begins as soon as you step onto the boat that ferries you to this floating palace. The views of Lake Pichola, with the City Palace and Aravalli Hills in the background, set the perfect tone. Upon arrival, I was greeted with the warm hospitality that the Taj Group is known for, making me feel like royalty from the start.
The Maharani Royal Suite – Khush Mahal
Our stay began with a base room booking, but the generous team at Taj Lake Palace upgraded us multiple levels to the grand Khush Mahal, a royal Maharani suite priced at 1.5L per night!
The suite is a new-age version of how royalty would envision their palace. Lavishly adorned with intricate décor, it combines traditional elegance with modern luxury. The living space, opulent bedroom, and stunning views of the lake left us speechless. It was truly an experience fit for a queen.
Dining at Jharokha – A Feast for the Senses
The restaurant Jharokha is another jewel in the crown of Taj Lake Palace. Overlooking Lake Pichola, it offers mesmerizing views of the City Palace and the surrounding hills. The ambiance is serene, making every meal a memorable experience.
The breakfast here was particularly extraordinary. From a lavish spread of local and international delicacies to impeccable service by Bheem, who made sure every detail was perfect, it was one of the finest breakfast experiences I’ve ever had.
The Poolside & Garden – Tranquility Redefined
The palace’s pool area is a picturesque haven. It’s one of the most beautiful spots on the property, offering serenity and luxury in equal measure. I had the chance to chat with Mukul Purohit, the poolside in-charge, whose inspiring stories of his warrior-like family and aspirations to join the armed forces left a lasting impression on me.
The lush green gardens, with their fountains, ponds, and intricate landscaping, form the heart of the palace. It’s the perfect spot to relax and soak in the beauty of this heritage property.
The Tajness – Unmatched Hospitality
Taj Lake Palace is not just about its stunning architecture or luxurious amenities; it’s the people who make it truly special. From Mukul at the poolside to Bheem at Jharokha, every staff member goes above and beyond to ensure an unforgettable stay.
As a parting gift, the Taj team surprised us with a beautifully crafted wooden box containing exquisite incense sticks, embroidered umbrellas, and a box of chocolates—thoughtful souvenirs to cherish the memories of our stay.
A Little About the Palace
For those interested in history, the Taj Lake Palace was initially built as a summer retreat for the royal family. Its unique location on Lake Pichola makes it the only palace in Udaipur offering lake-view rooms. With 65 rooms and 18 royal suites, it balances grandeur and intimacy perfectly.
Final Thoughts
Taj Lake Palace is more than just a hotel, it’s a timeless experience that takes you back to an era of royalty. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking a luxurious retreat, this floating palace delivers in every aspect.
For me, the upgrade to the Khush Mahal, the unmatched hospitality, and the sheer beauty of the property made this a birthday I will never forget.
